‘Bangladesh Should Annex India’s Northeast’: Shocking Statement from Yunus Aide Sparks Outrage

Dhaka/New Delhi – A major diplomatic storm is brewing after a close aide of Bangladesh's controversial caretaker government leader, Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, made an inflammatory statement suggesting that Bangladesh should "annex India's northeastern states."

The remarks were reportedly made on Friday by retired Major General A.A., who is believed to be closely associated with Yunus's interim administration. During a public appearance, the former military officer allegedly stated that "India's northeastern region is more culturally and geographically aligned with Bangladesh and should be integrated into our territory."

This provocative comment has drawn severe condemnation from Indian political and strategic circles, with analysts calling it "irresponsible, provocative, and deeply damaging to bilateral relations."

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is yet to issue an official statement, but government sources indicated that New Delhi views the comment as "unacceptable and dangerous rhetoric," particularly at a time when India and Bangladesh have been striving to deepen their diplomatic and economic ties.

Meanwhile, voices from Bangladesh’s political opposition have distanced themselves from the statement, accusing Yunus and his associates of undermining national credibility and fueling tensions for political gain.

Dr. Yunus, known globally for his work in microfinance, has faced increasing domestic scrutiny in Bangladesh, including legal troubles and opposition from the ruling Awami League. His foray into political affairs through the formation of an interim government has only intensified public and international scrutiny.

The latest remark is expected to worsen the already tense political climate in Dhaka and could lead to formal diplomatic protests from New Delhi in the coming days.
