Sydney, September 7, 2025 — Senior Liberal Party and Leader Sussan Ley and Shadow Immigration Minister Paul Scarr visited Harris Park, popularly known as “Little India”, on Sunday in a bid to repair relations with the Indian-Australian community following recent remarks that sparked widespread concern.
The visit comes after controversial comments by Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who suggested that the Labor government was encouraging “high levels of Indian migration” to strengthen its voter base. The remarks drew criticism from community leaders, migrant advocates, and members of her own party.
Speaking at Harris Park, Ms. Ley made clear that Price’s comments did not reflect the position of the Liberal Party.
“The remarks were wrong and will not be repeated,” she said. “Our immigration debate must be about infrastructure, housing, and jobs — not targeting any community. The Indian-Australian community makes an invaluable contribution to this country, and we deeply respect that.”
Senator Scarr echoed Ley’s message, describing Price’s comments as “unhelpful.”
“Australia’s immigration policy is, and will remain, non-discriminatory. It is based on skills, family reunions, and humanitarian needs — never ethnicity,” he told reporters.
During the visit, the Liberal leaders met with Indian-Australian community representatives, business owners, and families, acknowledging the suburb’s role as a cultural and commercial hub.
Harris Park, home to a large Indian diaspora, was officially recognised as “Little India” in 2023 when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a symbolic gateway celebrating bilateral friendship.
Community leaders welcomed the Liberal delegation’s outreach but urged the party to ensure that respect for multiculturalism translates into policy action.
Senator Price has since attempted to clarify her remarks, insisting they were misinterpreted, but tensions remain within the Liberal Party. Reports emerged of internal clashes, with Liberal MP Alex Hawke accused by Price of berating her staff — a claim he denies.
Meanwhile, past remarks by other Liberals, including Shadow Science and Cyber Security Minister Melissa Price, have resurfaced, drawing further scrutiny of the party’s stance on multicultural issues.
The visit to Harris Park underscores the Liberal Party’s recognition of the political and social importance of the Indian-Australian community, one of the fastest-growing migrant groups in the country. With electorates in Sydney and Melbourne increasingly shaped by multicultural populations, party leaders face pressure to rebuild trust and demonstrate a genuine commitment to inclusion.

सीनेटर स्कार ने भी ले की बात का समर्थन करते हुए प्राइस की टिप्पणी को “अनुचित” बताया।
“ऑस्ट्रेलिया की प्रवासन नीति हमेशा से निष्पक्ष रही है और आगे भी रहेगी। यह नीति कौशल, परिवार पुनर्मिलन और मानवीय ज़रूरतों पर आधारित है — कभी भी जातीयता पर नहीं।”
नेताओं ने हैरिस पार्क में भारतीय-ऑस्ट्रेलियाई समुदाय के प्रतिनिधियों, कारोबारियों और परिवारों से मुलाक़ात की और क्षेत्र को सांस्कृतिक एवं व्यावसायिक केंद्र के रूप में मान्यता दी।
हैरिस पार्क, जहाँ बड़ी संख्या में भारतीय रहते हैं, को वर्ष 2023 में आधिकारिक रूप से “लिटिल इंडिया” का दर्जा दिया गया था। उस समय प्रधानमंत्री एंथनी अल्बानीज़ और भारत के प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने मिलकर यहाँ एक प्रतीकात्मक द्वार का उद्घाटन किया था।
समुदाय के नेताओं ने लिबरल प्रतिनिधियों के इस कदम का स्वागत किया, लेकिन ज़ोर देकर कहा कि बहुसांस्कृतिकता के प्रति सम्मान केवल प्रतीकात्मक नहीं, बल्कि नीतिगत स्तर पर भी दिखना चाहिए।
सीनेटर प्राइस ने बाद में कहा कि उनके बयान को ग़लत ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया गया, लेकिन पार्टी के भीतर असहमति बनी हुई है। इस दौरान ख़बरें आईं कि लिबरल सांसद एलेक्स हॉक ने इस मामले पर प्राइस के स्टाफ़ से तीखी बहस की — हालांकि हॉक ने इस आरोप से इनकार किया है।
